How does smoking affect my voice?
Your throat
Smoking affects your throat in two key ways:
- It dries up the tissue around your throat, in particular your vocal folds. This dryness then leads to improper vibration along the vocal cords, which not only means your voice isn’t working correctly, but it can also cause vocal discomfort.
- It causes a swelling and inflammation on the vocal chords, which causes a friction and soreness when using your voice.
As a result of the above, prolonged exposure to smoke can also cause long lasting, and even permanent vocal damage.
Your lungs
It’s pretty common knowledge now that the tar in smoke can have a degrading effect on your lungs. When it comes to speaking, your lungs are your power source; essentially the air that you inhale and exhale powers your vocal folds, and in turn your voice. So the general rule here is that the less output your lungs are giving, the weaker (and potentially more uncomfortable) voice.
The chemicals in cigarettes also affect the way that your body clears your lungs. The tiny hair particles which help clear your lungs can also become paralysed, meaning that your body begins over producing mucus that can congest the lungs, hence resulting in Smoker’s Cough.
